According to the Amnesty website, in 2004 at least 3797 convicts were executed in 25 nations and 7395 were sentenced in 64 countries around the world (Amnesty International). It is inferred that actual figures would be much higher if the additional political offenders who had been unofficially executed in communist countries and socialist states in forms of summary conviction were added. “The first known execution in the territory now known as the United States of America was of Captain George Kendall, who was shot by a firing squad in Jamestown in December 1607.…” (Green). Since the death penalty statistics first began to be collected, 1012 people have been executed in the USA by mostly lethal injection (DPIC).
